‘Soldatenglück’ Signed by Divisional Staff of 196. Infanterie-Division (Kurt Möhring!)

Stunning fieldmade and handsigned 'Soldatenglück' document (DIN A4, can be opened) with “Dem Scheidenden techn. Inspektor (K) Voigtl wünschen bestes Soldatenglück” (The departing techn. Inspector (K) Voigtl, wishes the best 'Soldier's luck'), “Offiziere des Stabes der 196. Infanterie-Division” (Officers of the Divisional Staff of the 196. Infanterie-Division). This document was handsigned by all of the Divisional Staff officers of the Division! The 196. Infanterie-Division was engaged in the fightings and occupation of Drontheim (Trondheim), Norway. A stunning and researchable document from a Division serving years on the Norwegian front! One of the signatures is from the Divisional Commander Generalleutnant Kurt Möhring (Knight’s Cross and was Killed in Action during the Battle of the Bulge as Commander of the 276. Volks-Grenadier-Division). On December 18, 1944 Major-General Kurt Moehring, was on his way back to his command post when he got killed in his staff car near the village of Beaufort by machinegun fire. Interestingly, his command car was an American jeep and his death is disputed due the American took credit for his death but according to local historians there were no US troops within that area 48 hours after the offensive.

A few identified signatures are that of: Generalleutnant Kurt Moehring (Commander) and Oberstleutnant Klimke (Ia).

Awarded for the outstanding leadership of his Sturmgeschütz-Brigade during the fighting in late 1944 and early 1945. The following evening report sent from the XXVII. Armee-Korps to the 2. Armee on the 14.02.1945 describes the fighting of the Brigade that formed the most important element of Kröhne’s being decorated with the Knight’s Cross… “The Korps has nominated the Sturmgeschütz-Brigade 190 for a citation in a Wehrmachtbericht addendum. This Brigade has fought in daily engagements at the hotspots of the Korps front since the 14.01.1945, that is, for a whole month. In this time it has played a decisive part in fulfilling the objectives of the Korps and in maintaining the integrity of its frontline under the careful guidance of its excellent commander, Major Kröhne. In this time the Brigade destroyed 104 enemy tanks and 106 anti-tank guns for the loss of just 4 Sturmgeschütze. Of particular note is that the Brigade, despite daily operations and receiving no replacement vehicles, has nonetheless been able to maintain relatively high numbers of battle-worthy vehicles.”

Knight's Cross: "At the end of March 1944 the Soviets instigated a fierce battle between the Dnieper and Tschaussy rivers, in which the I./Grenadier-Regiment 51 (mot) was heavily involved. The Germans had by this time suffered heavy losses and after the 2. Kompanie of the Bataillon was no longer combat capable, it came down to 1. Kompanie and its handful of Grenadiers to carry on the fight. Among these was the machine-gunner Gefreiter Langer. When a Soviet battalion, soon followed by another, commenced an attack on the German Kompanie, Langer was forced to take over control of his squad after its commanding Unteroffizier had fallen out due to a nervous breakdown. Throughout that day and the following night however the squad was able to hold its ground despite the heavy odds. Their situation vastly improved when they finally received an ammunition resupply during the night. In the end Langer and his squad managed to fend off all strong Soviet attacks for four days during battles that raged both in daylight and darkness. This success was largely on account of Langer’s bravery and decisiveness, and it contributed significantly to the overall defensive triumph of the Bataillon. Thus on the third night of the battle already (26.03.1944) Langer was awarded the Iron Cross First Class and his comrades the Iron Cross Second Class. Afterwards Langer would be recommended for and receive the Knight’s Cross." (Source: Traces of War)

With this accomplished the German paratroopers were able to subsequently break through.

Postcardsize. Luftwaffe pilot flying Ju88s NJG2, NJG3. Received Iron Cross Second Class and First Class and the German Cross in Gold. The 10./NJG 3 Captain Olt. Walter Briegleb had 25 victories including the following Lancaster : Lancaster Mark III, PB 118 'Q' from 1654 Heavy Conversion Unit, RAF Wigsley near Lincoln was on a night exercise practice bombing over the Bassingham ranges between Lincoln and Newark close to the A46 Fosse Way. This crew had never been on 'Ops'. They saw one aircraft shot down in flames. The rear gunner then saw a Ju 88 who kept following the Lancaster until he gave the aircraft a burst of fire to put him off. Complying with instructions known as 'Scram' the pilot of the Lancaster headed in a Westerly direction. Five minutes later the mid upper gunner spotted another Ju88 but evaded any damage. Not long after, over Worksop, the Lancaster was hit on the starboard engine inner, the attacker for some reason or other could not be seen, after a second burst of fire the aircraft was out of control. The Skipper gave the order to bale out in the vicinity of Warsop Windmill. The blazing aircraft plunged, fortunately, into a field near the railway embankment at Sookholme, near Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. Six of the seven crew survived, the mid upper gunner (believed to be Flt Sgt Joseph William Camm RAFVR (1452103)) was killed, landing in the Spion Kop region. The Ranby family cared for them. Eddy Moss, deceased, a Gents Hairdresser on Sherwood Street was an A.R.P. Warden at the time and saw the Lancaster coming down in flames. Lancaster PB118 was one of two claims in Operation Gisella (a Luftwaffe night-fighter intruder sortie) by Oberleutnant Walter Briegleb during the night of 3/4 March 1945. He claimed to have shot down a 4-engined aircraft at 00:36 hours South of Waddington, and another 4-engined plane at 00:56 hours 40 km (25 NM) W of Lincoln - PB118 was probably the latter. Original Postwar Signature on a Postwar Photo of Alois Rampf. Hauptmann Alois Rampf (16.06.1916 in Dornstadt † 19.05.1994) earned the Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes on October 4, 1944 as Oberleutnant und Führer of the 3. Kompanie/ Pionier-Bataillon 88 of the 46. Infanterie-Division. Signed on ther reverse.

During the retreat of the 46. Infanterie-Division though the Becas Pass in the Carpathian mountains, the Soviets managed to get around retreating elements of the Division and occupy a height that overlooked the German escape route. The Germans thus had to either clear the Soviets from the hill or be wiped out. By committing all available elements they were however able to do so and thus escape the trap. Oberleutnant Rampf and his 3./Pionier-Bataillon 88 played a key role in successfully capturing this vital hill, and so Rampf was awarded the Knight’s Cross for his actions here.
