Historical Description

Grenadier-Regiment 977 formed part of the 271. Infanterie-Division, a division raised in late 1943 and stationed in occupied France.

The division consisted primarily of:

  • Grenadier-Regiment 977
  • Grenadier-Regiment 978
  • Grenadier-Regiment 979
  • Artillerie-Regiment 271

Following the Allied landings in Normandy on 6 June 1944, the 271. Infanterie-Division was committed to combat against Allied forces in the Normandy sector. The division suffered severe losses during the summer battles and was effectively destroyed during the fighting around the Falaise Pocket in August 1944.

As a result, documents connected to the 271. Infanterie-Division are directly linked to one of the most important campaigns of the Western Front.

About the Signatory

The award document is hand-signed by Generalleutnant Paul Danhauser (1889–1972), commander of the 271. Infanterie-Division during the Normandy campaign.

Danhauser was a highly decorated German officer and recipient of the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross. He commanded the division from its formation through its combat operations in France and Normandy.

Original award documents bearing Danhauser’s signature are sought after by collectors specializing in Normandy-related units, divisional commanders, and signed Wehrmacht documents.
