“Frenzel was one of the pilots that operated in captured Vickers Wellington bombers. On an operation he landed his plane on an airfield in Belgian-Congo, tanked his plane, took off again and bombarded the airfield he had just landed. When he was taken prisoner, the British sentenced him to death, but he managed to escape with a stolen plane on the same day as his conviction.”
Ritterkreuz awarded for: “Awarded in recognition of his ~200 flights flown, but even more so for his remarkable record of individual achievements as a transport pilot, which included the following notable events…
1) Volunteering to find a bomber crew that had been shot down down in enemy territory, which he was able to accomplish due to being trained in navigation by the stars.
2) Being pressed into service on a special mission which involved flying captured Wellington bombers against an Allied fuel depot in the Congo.
3) Narrowly escaping captivity during Operation Crusader. Frenzel had landed at Derna airfield, but found it already under the control of the British. He was taken prisoner, but before he was shipped off the airfield came under attack from German ground attack aircraft. Frenzel and his flight mechanic seized the opportunity, and despite British small-arms fire they were able to board their Ju-52, start the engine and take off.
4) Being the sole survivor of a flight of 13 Ju-52s that were attacked by a strong group of British fighters while in transit over the Mediterranean. Every single transport except Frenzel’s was shot down, but Frenzel was able to carry on with his heavily damaged plane all the way to the coast. Here he made an emergency landing in the ocean right next to the beach, upon which his plane washed up. Despite being heavily wounded, he had managed to keep the plane airborne for 45 minutes, reach friendly territory, and save the lives of everyone aboard his transport. He received a visit in the hospital from Kesselring himself in light of this accomplishment.”

A year later he was permitted to rejoin the Jagdwaffe but he was required to repeat his fighter pilot training. Crump was posted to JG 26 in mid June 1942 following completion of his flying training. Unteroffizier Crump was assigned to 5./JG 26 based at Abbeville in France. He gained his first victory, a RAF Spitfire fighter, near Berck sur Mer, on 27 August 1942. Crump received promotion to Feldwebel in April 1943. On 22 June, Crump brought down a USAAF B-17 four-engined bomber near Vlissingen but his Fw 190 A-4 (W.Nr. 793) “Black 6” was hit by escorting USAAF P-47 fighters. He was wounded and required to make a force-landing. To add insult to injury the B-17 was not confirmed. He was shot down by P-47 fighters of the 78th Fighter Group, USAAF on 22 February 1944. He baled out of Fw 190 A-7 (W.Nr. 340 253) “Black 14” very low, landing after only one swing in his parachute, but suffered only minor injuries. However, his injuries were to keep him out of action until late April. He transferred from 6./JG 26 to 7./JG 26 at this time. By June, Crump had been promoted to Oberfeldwebel. On 17 June, he was promoted Leutnant after 15 victories in 150 combat missions. On 13 July 1944, Crump was transferred to JG 54. He claimed three quick victories with III./JG 54 before being withdrawn from the front and rested at the Fighter Pilot’s Rest Home at Bad Wiessee. He rejoined the unit after it was withdrawn from the Channel front. Leutnant Crump was appointed Staffelkapitän of 10./JG 54 when this unit was transferred from the Eastern Front to the Western Front on 25 December 1944. On 25 February 1945, III./JG 54 was incorporated into IV./JG 26 and Crump became Staffelkapitän of 13./JG 26. He assumed command of 5./JG 26 on 17 April but was too ill with blood poisoning to fly. On 1 May, Oberleutnant Crump was appointed Staffelkapitän of 1./JG 26. On 2 May, he flew his last combat mission of the war.
Peter Crump was credited with 31 victories in 202 combat missions. However this could include a number of unconfirmed victories. All his victories were scored on the Western Front and could include up to seven four-engined bombers. (Source: Luftwaffe.cz)

Luftwaffe pilot flying Ju88s NJG2, NJG3. Received Iron Cross Second Class and First Class and the German Cross in Gold. The 10./NJG 3 Captain Olt. Walter Briegleb had 25 victories including the following Lancaster : Lancaster Mark III, PB 118 ‘Q’ from 1654 Heavy Conversion Unit, RAF Wigsley near Lincoln was on a night exercise practice bombing over the Bassingham ranges between Lincoln and Newark close to the A46 Fosse Way. This crew had never been on ‘Ops’. They saw one aircraft shot down in flames. The rear gunner then saw a Ju 88 who kept following the Lancaster until he gave the aircraft a burst of fire to put him off. Complying with instructions known as ‘Scram’ the pilot of the Lancaster headed in a Westerly direction. Five minutes later the mid upper gunner spotted another Ju88 but evaded any damage. Not long after, over Worksop, the Lancaster was hit on the starboard engine inner, the attacker for some reason or other could not be seen, after a second burst of fire the aircraft was out of control. The Skipper gave the order to bale out in the vicinity of Warsop Windmill. The blazing aircraft plunged, fortunately, into a field near the railway embankment at Sookholme, near Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. Six of the seven crew survived, the mid upper gunner (believed to be Flt Sgt Joseph William Camm RAFVR (1452103)) was killed, landing in the Spion Kop region. The Ranby family cared for them. Eddy Moss, deceased, a Gents Hairdresser on Sherwood Street was an A.R.P. Warden at the time and saw the Lancaster coming down in flames. Lancaster PB118 was one of two claims in Operation Gisella (a Luftwaffe night-fighter intruder sortie) by Oberleutnant Walter Briegleb during the night of 3/4 March 1945. He claimed to have shot down a 4-engined aircraft at 00:36 hours South of Waddington, and another 4-engined plane at 00:56 hours 40 km (25 NM) W of Lincoln – PB118 was probably the latter. During the Autumn OF 1944 Briegleb flew the ju 88 G-6: 4R+BR out of Kassel-Rothwestern, Germany. (Source: Military-Art)

Knight’s Cross: “In early 1944 the Soviets launched an attack that broke through the frontline of Grenadier-Regiment 45, and shortly afterwards they engaged the flank of the Regiment’s II. Bataillon in bitter close combat. After all the officers and NCOs had become casualties, Radermacher took charge of the situation and independently decided to meet the Soviet onslaught with his mortars, as all other attempts at success had failed. Constantly moving his guns to suitable positions, he was able to direct precise and deadly fire into the ranks of the attackers, inflicting high losses.
