At around 08:15 on that day about 150 enemy tanks (mostly T-34s) suddenly broke through the friendly infantry security. They stormed into the Panzer assembly area along a narrow front with great speed and all weapons firing. SS-Sturmbannführer Groß was swift to organize friendly resistance, and did so with such skill that the enemy tanks were surrounded on three sides. He himself fought in the middle of his troops, firing in every direction. Through his courageous example he inspired his entire Abteilung to fight, and in a tank battle that lasted about three hours it destroyed about 90 enemy tanks. The remainder were mostly knocked out in close combat or by friendly artillery. Friendly Panzer losses were minimal.”

€225,00Scarce Postwar Signature of Otto Skorzeny, who once was considered “the Most Dangerous Man in Europe”. Otto Skorzeny (12 June 1908 – 5 July 1975) was an Austrian-born SS-Obersturmbannführer (lieutenant colonel) in the Waffen-SS during World War II. During the war, he was involved in several operations, including the removal from power of Hungarian Regent Miklós Horthy and the Gran Sasso raid which rescued Benito Mussolini from captivity. Skorzeny led Operation Greif in which German soldiers infiltrated Allied lines by using their opponents’ uniforms, equipment, language and customs. He was charged for that at the Dachau Military Tribunal with breaching the 1907 Hague Convention, but was acquitted after a former British SOE agent F. F. E. Yeo-Thomas testified that he and his operatives had worn German uniforms behind enemy lines.
Skorzeny escaped from an internment camp in 1948, hiding out on a Bavarian farm for 18 months and spent time in Paris and Salzburg before eventually settling in Francoist Spain. In 1953 he became a military advisor to Egyptian President Mohammed Naguib and recruited a staff of former SS and Wehrmacht officers to train the Egyptian Army, staying on to advise President Gamal Abdel Nasser. He spent time in Argentina, where he acted as an advisor to President Juan Perón and as a bodyguard for Eva Perón. In 1962, Skorzeny was allegedly recruited by the Mossad and conducted operations for the agency. Skorzeny died of lung cancer on 5 July 1975 in Madrid at the age of 67. (Source: Wikipedia). On the 27th of that month, with the German relief efforts still in progress, Nicolussi-Leck received an order to halt all offensive actions. By this point he was in radio conduct with the garrison, and felt that its relief was of the utmost importance. He thus told his radio operator to send a reply stating that he (Nicolussi-Leck) could not be found, and with that continued the push to the town. Three days later, following difficult fighting, he was able to reach the trapped garrison with seven tanks on the early morning of the 30th. By doing so he was able to substantially reinforce the garrison’s defences, and he remained with them until Kovel was finally relieved for good. His recommendation also says that he destroyed 17 tanks in the process, although it is possible this number is for the whole company. Either way, Nicolussi-Leck’s actions were judged to be worthy of the Knight’s Cross, and he received this award shortly afterwards. (Source: Traces of War)
