In 1996, he was convicted of war crimes in Italy, for commanding the unit which was responsible for the Ardeatine massacre in Rome on 24 March 1944 in which 335 Italian civilians were killed in retaliation for a partisan attack that killed 33 men of the German SS Police Regiment Bozen. Priebke was one of the men held responsible for this mass execution. Condition as seen. Postcardsize.

On 6 June 1944 (D-Day), Priller, accompanied by his wingman made a single strafing pass attack on Sword Beach in their Focke-Wulf Fw 190A-8s. This act was first brought to the world’s attention by the book, then the film, The Longest Day. Contrary to popular belief, Priller and his wingman (Feldwebel Heinz Wodarczyk) were not the only Luftwaffe forces to attack the beachhead that day. Both Luftwaffe Hauptmann (Captain) Helmut Eberspächer, leading a ground-attack four-plane element of Fw 190s of Schnellkampfgeschwader 10, which downed a quartet of RAF Avro Lancasters at 05:00 over the invasion area, and the Luftwaffe bomber wing Kampfgeschwader 54 made several attacks on the British beachheads on D-Day. (Read more on Josef Priller (Wikipedia))

Knight’s Cross awarded for: “Strong enemy air units bombarded the bridgehead and city of Narwa during the nights of 6./7. and 7./8.3. in unremitting attacks, each lasting ten to eleven hours. On 8.3.44 at 07:00 hours, two and half hours of intense artillery fire began, supporting an attack that was followed by the 63rd Guards Rifle Division. That attack was supported by fourteen tanks and conducted on a narrow front against the northeast pillar of the bridgehead. Twelve tanks broke through the main line of resistance and advanced as far as the positions of the heavy infantry weapons of the SS-Freiwilligen-Panzer-Grenadier-Regiment 48 ‘General Seyffardt.’ At that critical rnornent, SS-Oberscharführer Wild (1./SS-Panzer-Abteilung 11) joined the fight with his Panther and in an extremely short time destroyed all of the T-34s that had broken through. As a result of his decisive intervention, he substantially thwarted the enemy’s plans to roll up the Narwa bridgehead. The destruction of the tanks was also important. Because of their loss the ongoing Soviet infantry attacks, supported by isolated tanks, could be repulsed.”

At the end of April 1945 Walter Pitsch took over the command of his Kompanie after all of its self-propelled 3.7 cm AA guns had been lost. During this time, in which the Kompanie was now employed in the infantry role, the unit managed to thwart an enemy penetration near the Mariazell-Hohenberg (in the Alps). Pitsch, leading at the head of the Kompanie, threw the Soviets back from their gains and held the position thereafter. The retention of this position was of great importance in covering the retreat of the Division, and Pitsch would be recommended for the Knight’s Cross in recognition of his success here. SS-Hauptsturmführer Paul Senghas (31.01.1916 † 06.11.1996) earned the Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes on December 11, 1944 as SS-Obersturmführer und Führer of the I. Abteilung/ SS-Panzer-Regiment 5 of the 5. SS-Panzer-Division “Wiking”. Condition as seen. Postcardsize. “On the 18.08.1944 the enemy advanced towards the Warsaw-Radzymin-Wyszkow road with massive forces and strong air support. At the time the 5. SS-Panzer-Division ‘Wiking’ was located along the general line Roszcep-Trojany-Debynki. At the time SS-Obersturmführer Senghas stood as the leader of the Stabskompanie along with the supply units of the I./SS-Panzer-Regiment 5 in Zazdroso (1.5 km east of Niegow). At 11:00 he received a message which reported the Russians as having broken through in battalion strength to a point 1 km east of the railway embankment. A wide gap existed towards the left neighbour, and there was the danger that the Russians would block the main road and thrust into the left flank of the Division. Recognizing this danger, Senghas made the decision to engage the enemy with the handful of men in the supply units at hand (despite their lack of heavy infantry weapons) and bring the Russians to a halt. Going into position at the railway embankment, he let the Russians approach to within very close range and then smashed their attack. Reinforcements could not be brought up, and so Senghas defended with his handful of men for the remainder of that day and also the two following days, fighting off strong enemy attacks with only rifles, sub-machine guns and close combat weapons. During this time 2 Panzer IVs, which had been in the repair shop and were only conditionally operational, were brought into the fight. 2 Sherman tanks and 1 T-34 were destroyed immediately after they appeared. The Russians took heavy losses in men and ceased their attacks. By his own initiative and personal devotion to duty, Senghas thus brought the 3 days of close combat to a conclusion. An enemy breakthrough was prevented and the danger to the left flank of the Division removed. Senghas is one of the oldest Eastern front combat veterans, who has mastered many critical situations through swift decisiveness and bold action while ruthlessly demanding the utmost of himself.”

SS-Sturmbannführer Hans Siegel (25.07.1918 † 18.04.2002) earned the Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes on August 23, 1944 as SS-Hauptsturmführer und Chef of the 8. Kompanie/ SS-Panzer-Regiment 12 of the 12. SS-Panzer-Division “Hitlerjugend”. Condition as seen. Postcardsize. Knight’s Cross: “Hauptsturmführer Siegel is the soul of the fighting spirit of his battalion. In the eventful offensive and defensive fighting around Caen, as company commander, he knocked out 11 of the 37 enemy tanks destroyed by his company. On 27 June 1944 (…) in a night attack, Siegel gained ground to the north and thwarted the advance of enemy armour to the south. Siegel held his positions without any infantry support and despite extremely heavy gunfire. While positioning and briefing his men, he was surprised in the dark of night by an enemy patrol. In the hand-to-hand fighting that resulted, he was stabbed in the right side. Nevertheless, he was able to repulse the enemy and hold his position. The next morning the enemy renewed their attack. Siegel fought with his tank to the last, making it possible to bring up new forces and thereby prevent a decisive British breakthrough. In so doing, Siegel’s tank was knocked out from under him for the fifth time and he suffered extremely severe burns.”
