“Oberleutnant Bonnke and his Batterie (3./Flak-Rgt. 42) were positioned in the area south of Riche (12 km NE of Chateau Salins) on the 11.11.1944. Although the Batterie was stationed totally alone here, it was able to smash a massive enemy tank/infantry attack that was slicing into an extant frontline gap. Such a feat was made possible via a combination of skillful positioning as well as the exceptional bravery of the Batterie commander. His actions here decisively halted the enemy breakthrough attempt, and 12 tanks and 11 halftracks were destroyed in the process. A further 15 halftracks were immobilized, with their infantry being forced to dismount and consequently be destroyed. Oberleutnant Bonnke thus achieved a decisive battlefield success that prevented the rolling up of the new friendly frontline (which was still in the process of destruction).”

Awarded for his successes commanding the Pionier-Bataillon (mot) 29 during its demolition and mining missions along the road that ran parallel to the northern coast of Sicily. In this time he would repeatedly distinguish himself by not just doing those missions he was assigned, but also through his mining/demolition of routes that were not present on any maps and that only he knew about. On one occasion he also played a major role in enabling friendly forces to retreat. After a bridge over a dry riverbed (which had been heavily mined) was destroyed by allied naval guns, he and a handful of Pionieren created a lane through the dry riverbed that permitted all German vehicles and heavy weapons to pass through in spite of strong enemy attempts at interference. On another occasion he engaged and halted an allied pursuit thrust, bringing heavy losses to the enemy forces involved.

“The Battery commander of the coastal battery ‘Marcouf’, Ritterkreuzträger Oberleutnant (M.A.) Walter Ohmsen, was the first to report the beginning of the Allied landing and in doing so initiated the alarm for all units on the western European coast. By his own initiative, his battery refrained from firing at the Invasion fleet until the last minute despite the heaviest of fire from enemy warships and bomber attacks. After finally entering the fight it then was able to sink a cruiser and a transport loaded with munitions. Numerous other enemy craft were damaged. Through his heroic devotion to duty Ohmsen and his brave soldiers were able to hold their tactically significant battery despite heavy losses and becoming encircled by the enemy. Through this he created the possibility for reinforcements to be brought up, while simultaneously preventing the expansion of the Allied bridgehead and the planned enemy breakthrough to the northern coast of the Cotentin. Already in the first phase of the Invasion Ohmsen was wounded when he personally led his men in the defense against the enemy landing forces as well as those paratroopers that had landed in the rear of his Battery. He only gave up his Battery after it had been completely destroyed, and even then only following the order of his superior.” – Read more about Walter Ohmsen (Wikipedia)
