Karl Nicolussi-Leck was the commander of a Panther company in the 5. SS-Panzer-Division “Wiking” during its efforts to relieve the trapped garrison at Kovel in March 1944. On the 27th of that month, with the German relief efforts still in progress, Nicolussi-Leck received an order to halt all offensive actions. By this point he was in radio conduct with the garrison, and felt that its relief was of the utmost importance. He thus told his radio operator to send a reply stating that he (Nicolussi-Leck) could not be found, and with that continued the push to the town. Three days later, following difficult fighting, he was able to reach the trapped garrison with seven tanks on the early morning of the 30th. By doing so he was able to substantially reinforce the garrison’s defences, and he remained with them until Kovel was finally relieved for good. His recommendation also says that he destroyed 17 tanks in the process, although it is possible this number is for the whole company. Either way, Nicolussi-Leck’s actions were judged to be worthy of the Knight’s Cross, and he received this award shortly afterwards. (Source: Traces of War)

Original Postwar Signature on a Postwar Photo of Leopold Schrems. Obergefreiter Leopold Schrams (04.10.1922 in Kirchberg † 07.08.2008 in Seekirchen) earned the Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes on July 27, 1944 as Obergefreiter und Gruppenführer in the Stabskompanie/ Gebirgsjäger-Regiment 85 of the 5. Gebirgs-Division.

Obergefreiter Schrems was a squad leader in Geb.Jäg.Rgt. 85 during the fighting in Italy in summer 1944. On May 27 Schrems contributed greatly to the successful defense of his unit when it came under attack by Allied tanks. An estimated 25 enemy tanks attacked Schrems’ group, which consisted of only 24 Gebirgsjäger and an anti-tank gun. The gun was quickly knocked out, leaving the remaining German soldiers in a very bad situation. As enemy tanks began to approach, Schrems’ left his position to attack individual allied tanks three times and eliminated them with Panzerfausts (one of which was destroyed at a range of only 15 meters). For his boldness that day he received the Knight’s Cross. (Source: TracesofWar)

Leutnant Ludwig Stautner (04.05.1895 in Schrobenhausen † 05.01.1983 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen) earned the Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes on June 20, 1940 as Major und Kommandeur of the I. Bataillon/ Gebirgsjäger-Regiment 139 of the 3. Gebirgs-Division.

“Major Stautner conducted the successful attack of Kompanie Schönbeck following detailed personal reconnaissance of his own. The resulting repulse of enemy forces in this area was of great importance to the whole Kampfgruppe. The resumption of the enemy attack was delayed for days, buying Major Stautner’s Bataillon valuable time to set up a strong defense. Ultimately the enemy did not dare to try and make any more major attacks west of Elvenes, where enemy landings were always to be expected.” “In this battle Stautner and his Bataillon were initially thrown back by a Norwegian battalion on the 24.04.1940, being driven east of the town of Elvenes. The Norwegian battalion commander decided to let his men rest for the night, and then resume the attack at 05:30 the next day. However Stautner would give them no rest. Attacking from the southern heights at 04:30 on the next morning, they were able to successfully assault the Norwegians still quartered in the houses below and wipe them out by 11:00. 144 prisoners were taken in this battle.” (Source: TracesofWar)
